Sam was born in Daly City, CA on November 5, 1968. The only child of artist-actors, Sam moved to New York City with his parents when he was two. Three years later his parents divorced and he spent much of his youth traveling back and forth between them. Raised by his father in San Francisco, he spent his summers in New York City with his mother, whose unconventional lifestyle introduced Sam to some very adult pastimes at an extremely young age. It was through his mother that he became involved in theatre, making his stage debut at the age of ten. Sam attended J.E. McAteer High School, a performing arts school in San Francisco. He made his film debut in the movie "Clownhouse." After high school graduation Sam headed back to New York City where he studied acting.

Sam would eventually appear in such films as "Last Exit To Brooklyn," "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," "Strictly Business," "Basquiat," "Glory Daze" and "Drunks." After years in the trenches of independent filmmaking, Sam found himself deluged with scripts following his off-center performance in Tom DeCillo's "Box of Moon Light" in 1996 in which he portrayed a whacked-out backwoods loner. He would later appear in "Lawn Dogs," "The Green Mile," "Galaxy Quest" and "Charlie’s Angels."

Sam has appeared on stage in "Face Divided" as part of the EST Marathon series, Edward Albee's "Zoo Story" at the Williamstown Theatre Festival and the off-Broadway production of "Goosepimples," which was written by noted film writer/director Mike Leigh.

Sam has guest starred in such tv shows as "The Equalizer," "Law & Order" and "NYPD Blue." He was a series regular in "Prince Street."

Sam was recently awarded the Silver Bear for Best Actor for his performance in "Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind" at the 53rd Annual Berlin Film Festival.
