His first feature film was "Carbon Copy" in 1981. In 1982 he became part of a very talented ensemble cast in the television series "St. Elsewhere" where he played Dr. Chandler. Denzel has appeared in over 20 feature films and he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in the 1989 film "Glory." On March 24, 2002 Denzel became the first black actor since Sidney Poitier to win an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in "Training Day."
