Denzel was born on December 28, 1954 in Mount Vernon, New York, to a Pentecostal minister father and a beautician mother. He received his post high school education at Fordham University and the American Conservatory Theater. He made his professional acting debut in the television movie "Wilma" in 1977. His first feature film was "Carbon Copy" in 1981. In 1982 he became part of a very talented ensemble cast in the television series "St. Elsewhere" where he played Dr. Chandler. Denzel has appeared in over 20 feature films and he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in the 1989 film "Glory." On March 24, 2002 Denzel became the first black actor since Sidney Poitier to win an Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in "Training Day." Denzel has been married to his wife Pauletta for over 15 years and they have 4 children.
