Alicia Keys is one of my favorite singers. I love how she brings back the ole
school in her music. I’ve always felt that music has gone downhill since the mid
1990’s. But when I heard her first cd "Songs in A Minor" in 2001, well I thought
maybe there is some hope.
The daughter of a white mother and a black father, Alicia was raised by her
mom in New York City. She attended the famous Professional Performing Arts High
School in New York City. While a teenager Alicia and her friends formed a group
called EmBishion. At 16 Alicia graduated valedictorian of her class. She was
offered a full scholarship to Columbia University but instead chose to sign a
record deal with Columbia Records. She would eventually leave Columbia and sign
with Arista which was then headed by the legendary Clive Davis. Alicia
followed Clive to J Records and in 2001 her debut cd "Songs In A Minor" was
released. The following year she would win five Grammy Awards for that cd.
Alicia’s sophomore cd is no jinx. "The Diary of Alicia Keys" released in
December 2003, proved that she’s the real deal.
